The summer seems to be flying by. It’s hard to believe that we’re more than half way through the year. And while summer is a great time to celebrate, have fun and slow down, it’s also a great time to think back to the resolutions, goals and dreams we had for the year.
Back in the January newsletter, we talked about beginning our journey in 2026 by identifying some goals and dreams (or resolutions). We discussed:
- Selecting a word or a phrase for the year.
- Using a tool to help us capture our thoughts
- Praying about our plans
Looking back, how has the year gone so far? Maybe you’re on track to achieving all of your goals. Congratulations if that’s you. Or, perhaps you don’t even remember and haven’t revisited what you planned for back in January. Or maybe you didn’t make any resolutions or set any goals. For many of us this has been a year full of changes that have impacted our plans. I thought it might be helpful for us to review where we are and do a bit of an audit. Things don’t always go as planned. This is not a time to beat ourselves up, but a chance to review, recalibrate and recommit.
Let’s set aside some time, grab our favorite beverage, and get out our notes, vision board or wherever you used to capture your goals in the beginning of the year.
First, let’s review the first half of the year by answering some questions:
- What goals and dreams did you have for your career, your health, relationships, and your spiritual life?
- When you look at these areas, where did you see success?
- What changed during the year that caused you to change your goals and dreams?
- What joy have you experienced on the journey?
- What disappointment have your experienced?
- If you didn’t set any goals, it’s not too late. Read my January blog post to help you get started.
Second, let’s recalibrate.
- What goals and dreams are you keeping for 2026, and which are you putting on hold?
- Which of your of your goals are no longer relevant?
- What’s changed for you this year and what are your new priorities?
- What do you want to accomplish in the next few months?
- What’s God saying to you about the rest of 2026?
Third, let’s recommit.
- Let’s recommit our plans to God
- Spend some time praying about your goals asking God which path to take. This is a great prayer – “Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow” (Psalm 24:4 NLT).
- As we mentioned in January’s blog post, let’s not be so fixed on the goal, that we miss the joy to be found on the journey. Don’t give up. Achieving our goals and dreams and takes time and perseverance! And remember, it’s never too late to change your course. As C.S. Lewis said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
Now that we’ve done our review, recalibrated and recommitted the rest of the year to God, remember to keep an eye out for those surprises, miracles and joyful moments on the journey. And even if we don’t achieve what we planned, we know that God has plans better than we can imagine!
